We live the US dream. We are always surrounded by beautiful beaches and an endless array of fabulous restaurants. But, we are also surrounded by poverty. When I was growing up, my friends and I would go for picnics at our local beach, and it was usually at some nice local spot where the locals had created a little beachfront shop. We never stayed there for more than a day or so on vacation. Our beach was about a 3 minute drive from our home.
Puerto Rico has some of the best beaches the US has to offer, and they are often surrounded by poor people. So when you’re a teenager and you don’t know anyone who’s from Puerto Rico, you have to look and find a nice beach somewhere. Luckily, there are a few places in the US where you can rent sandals, and with a little bit of planning and creativity you can make your own.
There is so much beauty in the island. The beach is beautiful, but in the summer the sun is merciless, so you need some sandals. It may seem like a simple task, but the sandals are made from rubber, and that rubber is made from the raw material of the people who live in the area and the sand is the same sand that they use to make their shoes.
