I first met with a heartland market in 2013 on a trip to Denver, Colorado. Heartland Marketplace was a local, locally owned cooperative of food producers and retailers that had been formed specifically to help local farmers grow their own food and sell it directly to consumers. I was the only visitor to the market and it was pretty amazing to see the diversity of the marketplace. The food was amazing and the conversation we had was just a glimpse into the heartland market as well as the larger food system.
We had tons of conversations with people who were there to talk about our food options to them. They just said, “We’re here to help you, but we don’t know where to go to.” We talked a lot about our food, but we’re not sure if it was the right thing to do or if the people who were there could have been more of a conversation with us.
The heartland marketplace has been a very important part of our business for a long time now and I am happy to see how it’s growing and changing. It’s one of the more interesting places in the food scene and I love it when restaurants are trying to get people’s attention and help them make informed decisions about their food choices. I also love that they are starting to be more transparent about what they are doing on the food side.
We are currently working on a new app for the Apple TV that does something similar to the heartland marketplace app. Hopefully this may change as we begin to get our hands on the app.
Heartland is a fairly new restaurant concept. As such, I’m not even sure where the idea came from. It’s easy to see how this would appeal to a lot of people, especially the young people that want to eat healthy and still have fun. The app is designed to get people interested in trying new restaurants.

It is not necessarily a restaurant in the traditional sense, however, because the app is a mobile version of the traditional restaurant.
In a traditional restaurant, you would either pay a fee to be seated and then sit down for a meal or you would wait in line. In the new restaurant concept, you are seated at a counter and then receive a menu and a list of what foods to order. Once you are served, you must then order the food. This is very different from the traditional restaurant concept, though, because it is a very time-consuming process.

You can’t really see the menu at your table because the app has taken over the menu selection. Rather than showing you where to get what, you are shown the items that are on the menu, displayed as if they were for sale. You have to tap a button to order the item you want. The result is a very jarring experience.
